Want a job, but you need English. Want some friends, but the common language is English. Want to study, but the course is in English. If yes, then you need to learn or improve your English.
When learning any language you need grammar, vocabulary, and you need to know how to put them together. You need the tools of a language and you need to know how to use them. To ensure a sound, secure foundation it is best to follow a General English course. Your grammar is then systematically developed and useful, everyday vocabulary is introduced. Each week, you learn something new.
The goal of spoken communication
However, you learn the grammar and vocabulary for a purpose – to communicate. You need to use and practise the grammar and vocabulary to fix them firmly in your brain. This is where a Conversation English course comes in. In these classes, you put to use all the tools that you have learned in the General English class to create meaningful communication.
Building practical English skills
In a Conversation class you might discuss music, books, education, the environment, and current affairs, and you also learn practical English – expanding your vocabulary so you can help your child with her maths homework, go to the pharmacy and ask for what you want, explain a problem with an appliance, or share a recipe. And you will, of course, learn to talk about the weather. You might even learn how to tell, and understand, a joke in English. Now, that is progress!
Overcoming the fear of making mistakes
The topics discussed in a Conversation Course are those that interest the students, which encourages a desire to communicate. These classes help students get over their fear of making a mistake.
The classrooms at Kickstart School provide a safe environment where no one is laughed at for making a grammar or vocabulary mistake. OK, a teacher might laugh a little when someone talks about pressing ‘bottoms’ instead of ‘buttons’! But mistakes are always gently pointed out, explained and corrected.
Small class sizes
Classes are small at Kickstart with a maximum of ten people, and everyone sits around a big table. This means that no one can hide; students have to participate and interact with each other and they learn from each other.
It also means they get to know each other, make friends and communicate with each other. This means not only producing the language, but also listening to and understanding what is said. Students often meet up outside the classroom and continue the discussion.
Practising your language skills
Most General English classes are once a week. If you aren’t using English much in between classes you won’t be consolidating and reinforcing what you have learned and it will take you longer to become a competent English language communicator. Doing a Conversation class at another time during the week helps you practise what you have learned. Instead of constructing a correct sentence in your head before daring to speak, you will be able to spontaneously speak your thoughts.
So get the right tools, know how to use them and then get creative with English!
