For the last couple of years, Japanese citizens were exempted from having a work permit to find a job and be employed in the Netherlands. However, due to changes in the legislation, this exemption will end on 1 January 2017.

Transition period

Japanese nationals already possessing a residence permit with the employment status “work freely allowed, work permit not required” may still use it for as long as it is still valid. Applications for a (new) residence permit, submitted on or after 1 January 2017, will again be assessed under the Foreign Nationals Employment Act.  These conditions require Japanese nationals to have an employer sponsor to obtain a work and then a residence permit.
