Babies and Toddlers
This book has been developed by the ACCESS volunteers
for the International Community to help answer some of the questions that
arise when having a baby and when caring for a child in The Netherlands.
We hope this book will provide you with information to help you make the
best decisions for you and your child. The Netherlands is one of the safest
countries in the world in which to have a baby (safer than both Britain
and the USA), both for mothers and for babies. In the 2002 report “State
of the World’s Mothers and Children (www.savethechildren.org),
The Netherlands comes in at six out of 117 countries for safety of birth
and lowest infant mortality. Many Dutch terms are used throughout the
book, usually with the English equivalent beside them. Where the English
is not given, you can look up the Dutch word in the Dutch-English vocabulary
section at the back of the book.
